As cliche as this sounds I want to play lead guitar in a band but I don't know where to start and if I wrote a letter to my favourite bands I would feel like an egg
I don't know if anything I say will help, but I'll give it a shot. If that is truly where your passion is, then don't let anyone deter you from your dream. You've got to look deep within yourself and find your why. When times are tough and you don't see hope, when people tell you to give up, when the weight seems like its going to crush you, you keep going. I think you should write letters and not be ashamed. Use every resource you have to connect to others who can push your skills; give you knowledge of how they got where they are now. Start looking for others who share your vision, your taste in music, your passion. Don't be afraid to start putting your music out there for people to listen to. Play at pubs, shows, wherever you can to get experience. Hone your skills everyday. It may take some time, but I believe your dream is possible. If you have some time, listen to this: http://youtu.be/Y7k7Jak8b34?t=9m51s
It is always an inspiration for me.
You have no idea how much that means to me, thankyou. I guess the first step would be to find a band but nobody I know likes the sort of music I want to play

I've seen some people do collabs over youtube. Start building up a nice library of videos and reach out. Then maybe at some point you can move to a location where there are others who share your same interests.
I'm working on the YouTube thing now and should (hopefully) have some videos up soon. But I'm in New Zealand and the music industry here sucks, and I'm only 16 so moving is kind of out of the question

Well, until you have that option later on in life, use whatever tools are at your disposal now. Just keep playing and don't give up. Don't lose that vision. There are a lot of people who have started way later in the game than you and gone on to achieve greatness. You can do it!
I guess, I just want to do it while I'm young though. I know that if I don't do it now I'll go to law school (which is my back up plan) and once I've got a degree I'll never do it.

Then whatever free time you have now, I would use to follow your dream. It sounds like you are on the right track so far.
It is always an inspiration for me.
