Get it as a puppy so it has time to get used to the cat

It would be best to get a puppy and a kitten at the same time. We get a puppy and our cat was very mean to him. Then we got a second puppy 2 years later and same thing. Both times though, the dogs weren't trying to be mean to her, though

still pay plenty of attention to the cat so it doesn't feel replaced

You need to get a kitten as long as the dog is friendly as your cat will feel like its getting less attention and it will act aggressively towards the dog

Get a puppy and bring your cat with you when you get it to make sure it likes it

Proper training and a calm environment when they meet. Try keeping them separate at first then start feeding them on opposite sides of a closed door they will associate each others smell with food and happy things. Also trading toys and bedding will help them get used to the smell of the other.
