I alwasy thought it was to eat clumps of rice, because everytime I eat rice it's in clumps.

Rice is also supposed to stick together, so there's that. The clumps are pretty small, though.

Chopsticks, funnily enough, were used as a replacement for knives in Confucian eras. Knives were equated with violence when eating, thus the "chop"sticks were born.
