Meaningful change goes from the inside out, though. You have to be in touch with yourself before you can even identify that you suck, let alone find a good solution.

I think it does, but I'm an optimist. I think beneath all the noise and clamour about personal identity that fills up our heads, we have access to a class of immaterial rational/spiritual/psychic/whatever resources that impel us to goodness.

So in a sense yeah, you have to let go of yourself to get there, but I think it's a truer self.

I think that once you realize that you have some changing needed, it's up to you to make that change yourself, and you'll still "be yourself". For example, I used to be pissy and rude and angry all the time, but with my changing attitude, I'm still myself, but I'm pissy and rude and happy now!

I think it means for example, I'm a mean spirited person. And I work on that. Or something less deep I could work on stop biting my nails. It's saying to be the best version of you.

I hate this because being yourself could mean be the biggest asshole in the neighborhood.

You do not become yourself, you must create yourself.
