If the kids parents are doing it right they would have been primed and thinking about the future for a long time before then right? It starts with the first "What do you want to be when you grow up?" question. How many times do kids get asked that one? I hope no-one enters adulthood like they've just been turfed out of their power pod like it's The Matrix.

Yeah, whenever I see these kinds of posts I just laugh. If parents talk to their kids about it, they can plan properly. Also, most people don't actually choose their college major until later, sometimes even years into a four year university.

But you have to pick a school that excels in your desired field, and some majors/dual degree/study abroad programs require planning from semester one to complete. While I concede that it isn't as though the decisions on flipped on like a switch, it may not be possible to follow every path without planning from ages 18 and younger. Some careers are best pursued from 14. So there is some truth when talking about how much power is put in the hands of young people, especially when you stop to think that there are some really crappy parents out there who do very little to help their children along.

I think the real issue here is that we live in a society that dictates how our futures should be. The dominant value in our society now is that you study, work, study more until you get a job in your desired field, pay taxes and raise a family. We have no individualistic expectations rather we stick to what we perceive as success. Therefore as a 17 turning 18 year old student, I'm just discovering that happiness should be more dominant as a value than money and work. We are not taught how to take care of our souls, so why would we force children to think about there futures?

Then by all means get high and live in a box. Nobody said you cannot.

If it makes me happy then I will. That's a stereotypical view that society thinks up for you to believe, being happy doesn't mean being high and having no home. Seriously.
