You mean the weeaboos or the ever so popular "otakus"? Yeah, they can ruin good anime without even trying. It's different to admire Japanese culture and language than to obsess about it.
Weaboos are the weird ones. Otaku is literally just the Japanese word for fan. Otaku's just call ourselves that because its more concise than "anime fan"/
Originally, "otaku" was more akin to "unhealthily obsessed person" than "fan." It's only recently that the word's started to become a badge of honor instead of an insult.

Nope to the ones who know the real meaning of "otaku", it's still an insult. Why do you think many anime fans don't consider themselves otaku?
Being otaku is just as bad as being weaboos. The Japanese are actually masters of being either, unexcelled by any other country on the planet.

Nande, you are incorrect. I understand what you are saying, but that is the connotation in modern culture, not the actual definition. According to Wikipedia otaku is "a Japanese term for people with obsessive interests, commonly the anime and manga fandom." Nothing negative about that.

How is being obsessive about one thing not negative? I really don't want an argument but, ask any Japanese-born person and/or expert of Japanese culture and they will tell you that being an otaku is an insult and a bad thing. I love anime but, there are other things to enjoy in the world. Do not let anime, comic books, movies, shows, or any other pop. culture trend to consume your life. You can enjoy anime and still have a life out of anime. Here is a guide to avoid being a weeaboo. http://www.wikihow.com/Avoid-Becoming-a-Weeaboo
And if you insist on being an otaku, here is another guide to avoid being a rabid otaku. http://www.wikihow.com/Not-Be-a-Rabid-Otaku

Like you said, I don't want an argument. But being obsessive about something is inherently bad. But it is if you dedicate every waking second of life to it.
"ask any Japanese-born person and/or expert of Japanese culture and they will tell you that being an otaku is an insult and a bad thing. "
Once again, connotation, not denotation.
Same! I watch animes in which they battle with superpowers and shit and people assume I'm some kind of pervert. :/ If you think about them like websites it makes more sense; just because you use the Internet doesn't mean you use the perverted ones but lots of those sites still exist.
Just so you know, if you like anime, you ARE a fan of anime. If you mean people who have merchandise and have all the character songs and just love the anime with all their hearts, why would that creep you out? Do obsessive Harry potter and other franchise fans creep you out? *I am not asking that to make you feel like a jerk, I'm just curious.* I'm just confused as to how that would be creepy. I mean, annoying, or thinking they're unreasonable for being attached, I guess I would understand more, but I wanna know why its creepy.
Watch out, hexy. You might hurt someone's feelings for saying the truth, which is ridiculous. I'm no supermodel but, I'm not going to kid myself into thinking I look "hot" or "kawaii" (I hate that word) in a its-bitty outfit with rolls of fat hanging over. I really wish people would wear costumes that actually compliment them.
So then they aren't allowed to express themselves @hexy? What about the post of the twins displaying as characters from the Zelda characters? Did they look ridiculous? And the characters aren't imaginary, if they were that would mean others wouldn't be able to see the character with their eyes. They are fictional, there is a difference. Also, do you hen think people should stop obsessing over marvel characters after 15? Because by your logic, they are imaginary. And THAT'S definitely not the case, many adults obsess over fictional tv shows in which the characters are just imaginary characters portrayed by people, and movies which is often the same case. I just want to understand WHY its bad to obsess, simply because the fictional personality can't be touched. You can't touch Jesus in real life with your hands, but people obsess over him. So what's the difference? Please, answer my questions, I am actually curious as to what your answers to the above questions are.
Also @hexy, anyone can stuff themselves into a tiny costume for any franchise. Not just anime. The star wars original movies aren't anime, but people stuff themselves into too-tiny princess Leia costumes. So don't act like its only anime cosplays that have this issue.

How about this, guest. They, meaning anyone who cosplay, wear appropriate costumes that actually fit them perfectly. Nobody wants to see a forty-year old hairy man in a skimpy Sailor Moon outfit.
I dont get what is so bad about obsessing over anime though. The fact that people dont know how to dress themselves appropriately is a totally different matter (in my opinion), because anyone cosplaying for any genre of media can cosplay badly. I am a high school freshman who has really good grades and a lot of friends, who also have good grades and friends, but we are all otakus. It clearly hasn't done much bad to us so I really just don't get it. I'm also not 40 year old fat hermit living in his moms house, I'm just a respectable freshman girl who has a social life like anyone else. Actually, I would say anime made my social life even better because I got more friends when I got into it, from being able to find so many others with common interests. It hasn't affected me negatively, even though I admit I've got merchandise like posters and shirts and jewelry (and even these 2 adorable 1"-2" figurines), I'm not ashamed to say I have all that stuff. I'm addicted but I'm perfectly fine.
Seriously @hexy (sorry I can't leave a normal reply chain on mobile btw)? Did you not read what I wrote? Are you just trying to really make people think that everyone that loves anime is some creepy, shut in, hermit? I know I'm definitely not at least two of those things (haha jokes, jokes), but seriously, don't try and make it sound like everyone who loves it and is addicted is some dysfunctional weirdo that clearly has a serious issue in their life. It has been a real positive in my life (relieving school stress [I'm in honors and advanced placement so it is very stressful], meeting new friends, giving me the inspiration to draw and get really creative, etc.), and so many other people can relate to this. You can love it and still be a very functional, polite, kind, human being. There doesn't have to be psychological issues that come from it, it can just be good fun that takes you on a new emotional journey everytime, just like reading a book, or watching a movie for example.
In all honesty, I obsess about anime and manga...more than id like to admit. But that doesnt make me a bad person. The way i dress is influenced by my favourite manga character, Misa Amane. But that doesnt mean I dont know how to dress for other occasions like dinner at a restaurant or a wedding. I am learning japanese at the moment and i do mix japanese words in my english and german. But only with people i know understand.
Sometimes Ill cosplay for no reason other than "I want to and I can.". Doesnt mean im a lunatic and in fact it has helped a LOT with my social anxiety because people talk to me and its a challenge to walk around dressed as some kind of gothic-lolita-cat-thing.
I have made many friends with other anime and manga fans of any age and gender and its really fun to fangirl over stuff with your friends when watching a movie or going to manga-con.
None of this causes ANYONE mental problems. If anything it helps get rid of them.
So just Damare to chiruauto.
Thank you xprincesszelda! That's what I'm tryna say haha. Its like they think we are all 40 year old fat jobless creeps or that we clearly have mental issues... I mean...
wut? LOL I don't get it. I wish they would explain why they think it makes people that way when almost everyone who watches it isn't like any of those things. Its just a media genre, and I'm just a huuuuuuge fan. Btw xprincesszelda, have you watched free! Iwatobi swim club? I don't know you preferences or tastes, but I love the story, animation, humor and the muscles are quite nice too. There is even a second season out now that airs every Wednesday. Its on crunchyroll or gogoanime.net for free (I mean no cost lol not just the name). Also, do you ship yaoi? Because even though that show has no yaoi in it, its easy to ship them that way for many reasons, and its beyond easy to find cute yaoi fanart for it. Its awesome! Just sayin! ;D
