The bullets would ricochet and more than likely hit the pope. Also because the muzzle velocity of a gun is so high a bullet wouldn't lose enough of it's energy to bring the velocity to a safe level there by harming or killing the pope. So the obvious solution in this case is to not give him a gun unless you want him to die.
