Excuse my French

When Americans say bad words, we may say 'Excuse my French', but the words aren't French.
The girl in the story didn't understand that, so when asked to speak French, she swears instead.

Also, the word for 'seal' in French (although spelled 'phoque') sounds a lot like a certain English swear word.
