That's what I always thought. Can't a robot just hack in another way then? Or calculate what numbers are there or use its robot eyes to see the letters or whatever robots do.

Bots (not robots) try to access it by using OCR technology, which basically means they try to guess the letters and numbers from pictures.
That's why a good captcha is a bad focused picture, or letters with random drawings on top of them.
And no, bots can't make another way around, since for what they are used to passing a captcha is legal but hacking into the website is not.
