If you turn 18, and do not know how to do taxes, create a budget, work, cook, do laundry and clean up after yourself, the school system hasn't failed you, your parents have. I'm not saying the curriculum at most schools doesn't need to be improved. But it's a parents job to teach and prepare you for the real world, not a schools.
Exactly! Thank you. Teachers cannot make up for a lack of parenting. Parents are responsible for preparing you to live your life, not the school system. We provide an education based on academics. Unfortunately, a lot of times, we end up providing education in social skills too from lack of parenting.
Oh, come on. People always go on about how part of going to school is to learn social skills and work ethic. I don't know if it's always been that way, but it certainly was all through my schooling.
Well, it's going beyond the typical social skills though. It's not just learning how to work with others, etc. The problem is, we are expected to explicitly teach it, but aren't given the time. Kids can learn these things by interacting and playing, but in America, recess and other play opportunities are being taken away for more instructional minutes. Unstructured play is so important and our students are getting less and less. They aren't doing it at home either, and instead are inside playing video games. So that's all I'm saying. We, as teachers, are expected to work it into lesson plans, when in reality, it should be practiced at home and during unstructured play just as much, if not more. It shouldn't be solely our responsibility. :)
I agree with Salty and Ariana. Besides, what if I told you that you're not meant to retain all knowledge you learn in school, but at least be able to comprehend it in the first place. If you need a refresher, as we all do, so be it.
I'm not even a teacher, and it saddens me to see these sorts of posts on here. And, as usual, no better ideas for education are presented. I guess we're just supposed to get rid of school because it's hard. Which is hilarious, because it tends to be the easiest part of one's life.
