They could have named him Sunset, Gold, Tundra, Amber, Blaze, Cinnamon, Cheyenne, Auburn, Autumn, Phoenix, or Vermilion.
Instead they name him Sapphire for his 'blue' ears

They named him correctly. Sapphire is green or blue-green according to density. They named him correctly according to his eye color. All the talk about the color and no mention that humans cam be incredible assholes that wipe out an entire species.
.
Actually, density doesn't have much to do here, it's more according at what other elements were present when the gemstone was formed. Because, just like other rock or mineral (mostly), sapphire's chemical formula is a repeating unit of Al2O3, which by itself is a sort of a milky white in color, when you add "impurities" (or other elements, such as copper, zinc, and the like) you get different colors. In this case, green sapphire is found when iron impurities are present. Sapphire can also come in colors other than blue or green, like pink.
Didn't want to say this, but since it keeps popping up on FS--there are no golden tigers in the wild because it's a genetic mutation. The 30 or so goldens in captivity were produced through inbreeding. You can see by the set of this tiger's eyes and by his exaggerated brow ridge that he likely suffers from a host of genetic issues, just like the white tiger rescued by BCR.
It's not a tragedy that there are so few left. It means that the golden tigers are being removed from zoos that breed unhealthy babies for lives in captivity. There is literally NO reason to keep producing them!
