You couldn't be farther from the truth. :-)
A Kaiser-Wilhelm-style mustache was widespread in Germany throughout the imperial era, but when the emperor fled the country immediately before the armistice on 11 November 1918, a lot of those previously in favour of monarchy demonstrated their dissatisfaction by shaving off the tips of their mustache. Thus, in old photos you'll see several prominent Germans with a Führer-style mustache.
YOU ARE ALL WRONG! Hitler didn't have that mustache because he liked Charlie Chaplin or because he previously favored monarchy.

The real reason is that during WWI, Hitler was in his trench (he was a soldier) and someone dropped gas on the trench, his long mustache stopped him from getting his mask on in time, and he was temporarily blinded and had large sores from mustard gas exposure. At that point he cut off the tips of his mustache down so he could get his gas mask on in battles to come
He had a full rocking moustache that he carefully waxed every morning, but had to shave it down to fit in the gas mask. He just couldn't shave it all off and kept that ridiculous souvinear
