The selected breeding has caused many health problems for pugs. Unlike the one pictured, today's version has a compact snout which causes breathing problems and makes it difficult to regulate body temperature through their snout. The excess skin folds around their snout can be a breeding ground for bacteria, and the same applies to their trademark buggy eyes. Not to mention problems with their knee-caps slipping. So very sad for these poor dogs.
Not to mention that all pugs are born Caesarian because they cannot give birth normally, also the curl in their tails can occur in their spine making them crippled. Pugs have an incredibly high puppy mortality rate, more than almost every other dog. And we keep breeding them cause "there just soooo cute". Its a crime....
you can get old-fashioned pugs from the right breeder, we've got one. You couldn't show them, but they've got the same amazing personality, and our is so cute, no-one looks at him and says, but that's not a real pug.
