It's not that it can't work, it's that a switch over to it would cause a huge upheaval in the current situation that people don't really want to deal with. This is all speculation, for I am an engineering student and not a politician lol
It also gets harder the more you have. The land size and population of most socialized countries are nowhere near as large as the US.
Its also not just about not thinking it works or not. Lot of people don't believe they should have to pay and give stuff up that they've worked for, so that somebody else can have it handed to them. Whether they "need" it more doesn't matter.
and the government has more control over u in socialism. plus you shouldnt be government privileged. companies should treat u like an adult and interview you. and we have better healthcare. better quality and flexibility. we dont have to have the government plan our appointment, we can choose. and why should i have to pay for other's living? what have they done for me? i worked hard for it! plus finland has about 6-7 million and the us has 319 million
Definitely a question of mentality. Some people don't understand or agree with the principle of solidarity. The government hasn't more control over you in socialist countries. Socialism doesn't mean USSR. You might be less free to act as you want, only if it is in the general interest, which is a fundamental notion in this kind system. Personally I prefer to earn less money so that everyone can benefit from a really good healthcare, no matter who you are.
However, Finland system (as other Nordic systems is admired in a lot of European countries) can't be reproduce because of the low number of inhabitant (as you said atomiczombie757) and the cultural homogeneity.
