Not that long. Most of the women are skilled in applying it, or some use stamps, so the art itself doesn't take too long, but then you have to wait for the mendhi/henna to sorta soak into and dye your skin. The girls at our school brought some a few times and we gave ourselves temporary tatts.
The longer you wait, the darker it turns, so most brides are already in their pjs when it's applied. To make doing things easier, we now scrape the actual mendhi part off after a few hours and soak our hands in lemon and sugar to make the color much darker (as its said that the darker it is, the more your husband loves you). But you can't wash it with water because once you do, it won't be getting any darker.

Why do you know this. I fail to see the point in knowing this much stuff
i'm indian too :) more info: if you want your mehndi to last longer, avoid getting water on it cuz it'll wash off rather quickly. whenever i get some mehndi put on, i always shower with a plastic glove on so that my hand doesn't get wet and so that the mehndi can last longer
no matter how careful i am, it always seems to rub off when i go to sleep! like, i'll keep my arms out of the blanket, or i'll wrap a cloth around the mehndi, but in the morning, only like half of it is still there, haha :)
meh, not really... i forget what it's called, but when my aunt got married and had someone do her mehndi, there was a different name for the ceremony. the stuff you put on your hands is called the mehndi
I'm Indian and we call it "Mehndi Rasam" which translates to Mehndi Ceremony or just Mehndi for short. :)
Edit: The name could change depending on what kind of Indian you are. I'm Gujarati and that's what we call it and I know most other North Indians call it that, too. Is your aunt South Indian?
thanks, haha me too!! i watch a lot of gujarati movies and shows! have you seen Bandini? it was a serial show thing that my family and i found online and we watched all of it and it was AMAZING! it was slow in the beginning, but was amazing once the plot picked up
Yes!! We used to watch it when it came on TV since most of it was still in Hindi! It was our favorite show! It was great and it had a lot of lessons! Pretty surprising for an Ekta Kapoor production!
Mhmm ;) I also liked Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon which is more romance than anything and it gets really dramatic at times (like any other indian serial) but I really loved it! You should try it out! All the episodes are on Dailymotion!
Oh I used to watch on my iPod but I know YouTube has the episodes too! And if you just google search it, there are a lot of sites that have alternate video links :)
it's kinda cold tbh!! there's a huge protest going on at the mall of america for the BlackLivesMatter thing, and i couldn't go... the mall is like 2 hours from where i live. they practically shut down the mall and the workers left their jobs to show solidarity
Not just India.... The Middle East does it to, and so do east Islanders (Indonesia, etc.) WARNING- Taking it off after it dries us te HARDEST THING IN THE PLANET (at least in my opinion) and also when you get it it take forever and you can't do shit while its drying but still- totally worth it.
My muslim neighbor Samah took me to an Eid prayer once... I didn't pray, but it was beautiful how many people showed up for it, and there were so many beautiful outfits :)
It's lovely but things as intricate as that and what they do to most brides takes HOURS.
