Notice the grammatical use of the pluperfect? Yeah, that's referring to the historical past. Jesus HAD 12 disciples to begin with.

You can believe or not in the whole Christianity thing, but there is some proof that Jesus actually existed.
Another thing is that he did exactly what the bible says he did, there is no proof of that. But all seems to point that, at least, Jesus existed.
