It is funny how, whilst knowing the context, you are still able to take what I said out of context.
What you say is about pride, not about intelligence.
A british neuroscientist (I don't remember his name) once said what it means to be stupid:
Stupidity is the lack of skill of some sort, but you cannot know that you lack these skills because you need exactly these skills to be able evaluate your own skill. Therefore you are not able to grasp your own stupidity since you lack these exact criteria to evaluate it. (Do not get me wrong, I mean to use the pronoun 'you' in a rethoric sense)
Problem with this german proverb is: it's a straight lead to idiocracy. And yes, I guess its coming from a general (german) opinion that controversy is a bad thing.
Personally I fucking hate it when I have the better argument and my opponent says something like "let's stop this here, it's just your rhetorical skills are better" as if that means he's NOT wrong, he can't just phrase his idea right.
Oh, anbd I fucking hate it too being called defensive when I just don't want to be the "smarter" guy and give in, because I am right and he is not.
It is just a saying, don't take it too seriously. I think It rather says not to be too proud, and not to waste resources on something that cannot be changed immediately .
On any subjectmatter there is always more than just one outlook. I think the wisest attitude, is to know that there is no thruth in any perspective for itself alone. The great german philosophers, authors and artists always knew that, but it is the complete opposite of Hitlers and other Ideologies. The German people is actually divided: those who seek truth in dialectic controversy, and those who'd rather have one truth they can follow and aren't able to see anything besides that (It seems to me to be a reminicence of the Third Reich),but many other 'cultures' suffer from the same symptoms.
I have given up to take the 'high road' or be the 'bigger person':If I have the impression that my PARTNER in a dialogue defines him or herself as my OPPONENT, I just walk away without explanation, or I just tell them to Fuck Off.
because it is better to stop the fighting and acept defeat even though you don't deserve it and you know you are right
