Thank you for this one. I am sick of people only reacting to something when it's close to them and/or when they could easily become victims too and/or when they have the same skin color.
I totally understand this post, but in France people were killed in the name of the freedom of speech which concerns all the humanity. It's not about of how many people were killed, it's about the message. Of course, that doesn't make all the wars all around the world less violent or more acceptable. I just want to explain you what is the feeling here in France. Je suis Charlie.

"The media made a mountain out of our cartoons, when on a worldwide scale, we are merely a damn teenage fanzine. This fanzine has become a national and international symbol, but it was people that were assassinated, not the freedom of speech! People who sat in an office and drew cartoons." Luz
Boko haram are a much larger issue than the terrorist threat in France. The reason there has been little international attention on the massacre in Nigeria is because it's not in the western worlds interest to intervene. Only 7 of the 276 girls who were kidnapped have been found and 2000 people were killed last week yet international aid and attention is completely focused on France
The difference is that we all know Africa is not a safe continent. As the middle east is not a safe region. We know people are killed there on a daily basis. It's not like people don't care about that.
But that happening in France is a shock. Because France is supposed to be a safe country. Because of all the terror precautions. You could also ask why everyone cared about Australia when that man took hostages not so long ago. Or why we cared so much about 9/11.
Plus not only have people been murdered - a human right has been attacked, the freedom of speech and France holds this right very high. That makes it that much worse. It was a sad try to scare us into not expressing our opinion.
The difference is, the media covered the Middle East/Africa for a couple of days, they need new stories.
Ebola never died down, the media just moved on to other stuff.
.
Terrorists have been killing in the Middle East for decades.
People have been dying in africa for centuries.
Cartoonists were killed by terrorists one time in France.
That's exactly what I was thinking yet everyone calls me insensitive for saying that. Not saying what happened in France is right or ok, but 12 people getting killed isn't as bad as thousands getting killed.
I looked more into this, a group of radicals loosely identified as Boko Haram, which is sometimes called Islamic radicals and sometimes stated to have ties to Islamic radicals has killed over 2500 people and destroyed/burned 3700 homes or buildings over the last 6 months. They are targeting Europeans, Americans, South Americans, Christians, and educators. They are trying to remove the western scourge from the earth. They even maim or kill other Muslims that voluntarily live in peace with gays, Jews, Catholics, western doctors, or other undesirables. They are not as radical as Isil/Isis but nearly as brutal. Educated women are favorite targets of theirs. Isis killed 2 Germans and a Rusdian this week on video. I am curious to see how Putin deals with this, Germany has a long history of retribution where necessary as well, Merkel's response might be interesting too.
