Came out in the movie theatre actually, and they gave you a special, kinda rare now, Mew pokemon card. Some other wierd pkmn trivia is that this movie showed some of the pokemon that were going to be shown in gen 2 a year early before the release of the Jhoto region.
It looks like this, http://goo.gl/HoVHPq It can't be used in actual pokemon TCG ever but it looks cool. Also side note bottom left: Illuminarty cumfermed.
The thing is that the ones that are rare are the ones that have barely any damage, which is extremely hard to do. Reasons are: they are given to you inside a movie theatre, so unless you have a card binder on the spot, it would probably get damaged. Another factor is that the cards are pre-opened so they are already handled by someone else which also damages the card. These factors add up and many more to the price. I heard a while back, while browsing the interwebs, that an unsealed pack of these cards were sold for a lot of money (don't remember exact, will edit if found, but it was atleast more than 3k)
Like inside a package and stuff? Because that's the highest you can go I'm pretty sure. If they are out of seal there's a company that checks how much they are worth for you, and then stores them for safe keeping from further damage.
Ok back. Also quick note apperantly last I looked up the deal that was made for these packages and it was posted in 2006, so the price dropped a lot since more have popped up. Though you can make very quick cash with this, around 100-120 bucks each card right now. I don't know why it changed so drastically and I feel bad but the people that payed a grand per card now. Also sorry that I didn't do more research on this before I commented.
Side note I just looked and I found out I have 3 of them in a binder.
Also forgot to add this, the reason why the price dropped is because a company figured out how to make exact copies of them and they are barely any differences so they got mass produced and the price dropped.
that's the last person I expected to hear those words from
