The creator of comic sans wanted people to be able to use a font similar to the font in Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns. You have THE MOST critically acclaimed graphic novels OF ALL TIME to thank for comic sans. also, I don't hate comic sans.

I don't think many people legitimately do. They just pretend to hate it because "everyone else does". A phenomenon very common in today's society; I like to call it "The Sheeple Principle".
Basically, someone does something, some people catch on because they agree with/ really like it, and eventually EVERYONE is part of it. Explains Flappy Bird, at least.
while I think that its true that a lot of people hate it because others hate it, I think it's also just a reminder of school. A lot of people I know, when they were younger, all teachers ever used on powerpoints and printouts was comic sans, and it became a joke as it was never a different font. Eventually it just became so overused that it turned to a dislike
