Not necessarily. A lot of psychiatrists tend to overdignose just to be on the safe side, and questioning judgement that may not always be right is not ba parenting at all.
Same, as a person with depression and social anxiety, I've been told by my parents multiple times that "it's just a phase" and that I'll "just grow out of it"
okay guys just being honest here. my parents had a similar mindset (not that bad, though) when they finally let me start therapy when I was fourteen. after several years, I took them to see my therapist with me several times. they were finally starting to see the light. recently I was recently diagnosed with Aspergers (if you didn't know it's a form of high functioning autism). now they truly understand it's not who I am but just something that I need to live with that doesn't make me any less of a person. just saying don't give up just help them realize
It's attention deficit disorder. It's a type of ADHD, and is also known as ADHD-PI. Basically it's means the same thing as ADHD but you're not as hyperactive.
The accuracy of this is saddening. I have been DIAGNOSED with depression from a TRAINED THERAPIST and she told my mom because she was worried about me turning suicidal. On the way home my mom said "she claims you hate yourself but your so selfish and won't help out me and dad more. How do I know your not lying?" Needless to say I cut more that day and side than have been suicidal
I want to respect the fact that this is true and painful for many people, but I just have to say for my amazing mom's sake, there are many parents out there who are not like this. My mom fought against a bad psychiatrist I had once, who basically flipped this chart around, to make sure I got the help I needed. There are tons of great parents out there who do everything to help their kids when they're going through things like this.
Psychiatrists train for many years to help patients. Most parents don't get that.
The human mind is one of the most complex things in existence and psychiatrists understand it (at least in part) better than many other people.
