It's because most fruits were called apples so they called this the pine apple rather than anana.
What would actually be confusing is why we call countries different names than what they call themselves. Like, why call Japan Japan when in their language it's Nihon ?

It's a pineapple because the Brits were familiar with conifer fir trees and had already named that thing on a pine tree a pine cone. They found these and figured it looked like a pine cone but it was a fruit so it became pineapple. Same reason the Spanish call it pinia(pine cone).

I call it "dứa" or "thơm", sounds nothing like ananas.
