I actually explained to dad what shipping was and he said he ships me with my crush... Needless to say, life is good.

LUCKY
My friends ship me and my crush [They even have a ship name, but for sake of partial anonymity I'm not saying it] but whenever people ask if we're dating (I once got the balls to ask her to a dance and she said yes holy f***) she says 'I don't know!' and I can't force anything, yet I wanna get confirmation about what 'we' are.
But-But what if I scare her away? I wanna push things forward, but I wanna let her make her own decisions. Yet I don't want her to stop being friends with her. (I've deduced people aren't scared of asking others out because of rejection, it's because it might tear apart the friendship as well)
a girl isn't going to be the one to make things official. 9 out of 10 times the girl is waiting for the guy to define the relationship. You can't wait for her to decide, if not she'll get tired of waiting. Ask her to another dance or something then when you guys are having a good time pull her aside and tell her you like her (wait for her reaction, good or bad), then tell her that you're hoping to be more than friends. You're welcome.
A ship with a canon is the strongest ship because there's actually evidence from the original source to back it up, or its actually happening in the show or book. For example, the Percabeth ship is canon, because its actuall happening between Percy and Annabeth. The Leo and Hazel ship is not canon because each has different partners.
I am old enough that I had to look these terms up. Now I think young people are even stupider that I previously did. How did these terms ever get their modern meanings? Neither of them make the slightest bit of common sense.
Actually, canon is a word that's been around long before ships and fandoms came about. Its definition is "a general law, rule, principle, or criterion by which something is judged." Which fandoms simplify into "official.
There was no reply button available for most of these comments, so I will reply to them all here. OK, every generation has had its own slang, but most of the language used lately is ignorant. When people are not able to pronounce or properly spell common words, NO, I don't feel bad about calling them stupid. The artillery used to sink ships was spelled CANNON. Canon was referring to music, or an official rule.
I tried to explain it to my mom.
"So a ship is when you really want two people to be a couple."
"Why?"
"Because you think they go well together"
"Then what?"
"You can draw them together or write stories..."
"That's useless"

*booming sound*
*splintering wood and men screaming*
