Those books are "Death Notes". I.e., you write someone's name in there, and they die. G.R.R.M. is notorious for killing off characters in his book series "A Song of Ice and Fire", which has been adapted into a TV series by HBO, titled "Game of Thrones".

Death Note is an anime series about a notebook just described above, and Game of Thrones is medieval political fantasy. Good stuff.
