Would someone please explain to me in which sense feminists don't believe in evolutionary psychology? I'd never heard of the term before, and I just looked it up but I'm still not sure I know what it's talking about.
I think it's explaining about how over the course of history our culture shapes our minds in such a way that we have evolved psychology. Like, how now we live longer so we mature later or like how back then what would be considered sexually pleasing wouldn't be today. I'm not explaining this right. I apologize.
It's because they claim gender roles are just pushed by a patriarchal society instead of having these things come about through evolution. e.g.: women are pushed into child care jobs because the patriarchy wants men to have all positions in math/science careers and positions of power, not because they are naturally tuned to be psychologically more caring and nurturing than men.
People who say "feminists don't believe in evolutionary psychology" do not seem to have any idea about feminism, evolutionary psychology, as well as science in general. They believe feminist are women who envy men for their penises and that the concept of evolutionary psychology is pretty much summed up by Ben Greensteins "The Fragile Male". Richard Dawkins i.e., one of the leading scientists in the field, comes to whole other conclusions than Greenstein, who is btw. not a scientist at all, and it is pretty safe to say, there are not many feminists arguing with his opinion, that even though genes influence gender specific behaviour, it is much more influenced by sociallisation. Of course there are feminists opposing against male activists who want the public to believe that evolutionary psychology is the science of justifying male douchebag behaviour, cause you know, its in our genes, ladies.
Okay, now that I understand a bit better... There are far more women that may want child care jobs because that's where they are. But there are also many women who don't want that, and are pushed into things like that anyway. I've said that I never want kids, and while I may decide differently some day (I'm not getting myself neutered or something), you wouldn't believe the number of people (male and female) who decide for me that I'm wrong and some day I'm going to pop out a million babies. I've seen guys laughed at for wanting to be more feminine, and girls laughed at for doing things that are more masculine. It's not evolutionary to mock people for not having your brain, it's dickish. Also... Have you noticed the difference between toys for little boys (cars, guns, balls), and little girls (tea sets, dolls, kitchen toys). As a young girl, I can definitely say that people tried to push me towards the girly things, and that could be part of why girls tend towards more girlish careers.
