On a semi-related note, Girls of Funsubstance: how does one compliment a girl's makeup without making it sound like you're insulting her natural appearance? Like, if a girl does a good job of making herself look pretty and I want to let her know that she has a talent for pretty use of makeup, in the same way I'd compliment an artist on their use of paint or a musician for their use of instruments, how do I say that without unintentionally implying "as opposed to when you don't wear makeup and you look terrible."
Idk dude, but apparently saying "you look good /without/ makeup" offends her twice: once for saying her makeup is ugly; and again saying her face isn't good enough for makeup. So just say she looks pretty.
Why, hello there! It is I, a girl of FunSubstance. I promise you, a compliment is a compliment and it doesn't really matter a lot how you say it. She'd most likely appreciate it either way. Just say that she's looking good/pretty/amazing or/and that you like her makeup. That's more than one could ask for.
As myself am of the female human species, don't understand why I was downvoted because I've been told on both occasions on having said that. Some people really do get offended over the tiniest things, even when it's ment as a compliment...

Guest, you could just say, you look really stunning today. It tells them that they're whole appearance is good looking. The word pretty insinuates superficiality. Stunning is a huge compliment.
What about both men and women who dye their hair? What about men and women who get nose jobs or their teeth fixed? What about tanning? What about men who get hair plugs? Do you also consider those things as "lying to you"? There are so many ways people can alter their appearance to make themselves feel more attractive, yet no one ever says anything about any of those- no one ever refers to any of that as "lying". But sure as day, everyone always insults a girl when she wears makeup. The point I'm trying to make is, it doesn't matter if you don't like they way she wears her makeup- if it makes her feel good and makes her feel attractive, then leave her alone. If she likes to wear a ton of makeup, let her. If she doesn't like wearing any make up at all, let her. It isn't really up to anyone but her and you have no right to insult her for her choices. (Sorry for the rant.)
