According to the story within the post, a Frenchman and a Russian would've been saved. Lucky them!

Thats only if the bullets they fired where exactly at each other and nothing interfeired and no one oved or got in the way. Who knows, something strong-ish and metal got in front of one of the bullets and it ricosashed of that and hit someone else. They could have ended up accidentally killing on of their comrades. Plus guns back then were hardy acurate. There are way to any other things that coulld have happened to just asume that the bullets would have hit the other person.

True. Or the bullets could have glanced of each other

This actually happened quite a few times during the American Civil War, you can see them on display in civil war museums. Far better odds then a billion to one.

A billion to one isn't bad at all. Hitting the lotto is much, much, larger, and yet it happens.

Actually, the odds of it happening at some point are pretty good. The odds of it happening to those 2 people are infinitesimal.
