Mines always the other way round, at a young age I've managed to convince my mother that corner store shops have really high prices resulting in her giving me $20 for $10 worth of stuff.

Well if you pay in cash at a corner shop you don't really get given a receipt. So no

That sounds shady. I always get offered receipts at corner shops.

Nope not really, i grew up in a country where receipts don't get used often at all. They usually end up being thrown away immediately so unless you ask for a receipt it's assumed you don't want one in most small businesses
