I really don't understand this trilogy

I mean, I was getting into it, it was all "woah, mythology!" And then all of a sudden the main characters just kind of vanished (not even a cameo) and it became about racial tensions on an American football team. Some of the story points didn't match too but all in all I think the writers took a risk and it worked in their favour
