If it told you the username was incorrect, you could know someone else's password.

That AND it's an intentional security protocol. If you knew which one was right then it would require half the effort to crack.

normally you can tell cuz if the username is right it will start to threaten you over the number of times you put the wrong password in. is its the username that's wrong it'll just keep giving you that message
