I don't think barbies ever really gave little girls eating disorders I had them when I was little and I was never anorexic or anything.... I'm sorry it just seems to me that if some things wrong with your kid shouldn't you as a parent be blamed? Not an inanimate object.......
It's awesome that you weren't negatively affected by playing with barbies, but studies have shown that this particular doll gives young girls a negative body image, leading to eating disorders later in life.
I think guest is right. While Barbie doesn't directly cause eating disorders, it certainly influences the young minds who play with Barbie. Just look up Barbie and eating disorders and you'll find a ton of articles on it
When you're little, your mind is like a sponge (that's why it's best to learn a language when you're young), so negative body image messages are much more likely to stick. However, it would be excessive to completely blame Barbie when there are so many other ways that body image is targeted.
Also the only reason that Barbie is proportioned the way she is was because it makes it SO MUCH easier to dress and undress her. Which is the point of a FASHION DOLL.
And the same adults blaming Barbie for shit body image are the people dying their grey hair and wearing body shapers and policing children for not looking like Christian stereotypes.
dolls do not have realistic proportions, this is all just silly. kids don't even see things that way. god im pretty overweight but i wear my hair in this big perfect bun and so as a result little girls tell me i look like Cinderella. they dont even see this shit as fat/thin.
stuff this, there needs to be more realistic and varied dolls for children to play with, it's unacceptable that the main doll on the market is an impossibly thin white girl. We need to include divers versions of people into children's play, children learn and emulate social situations through play, learning important skills, having a more varied and diverse representation of doll does impact positively on a child's social development. In the end Barbie is a bit shit. Whatever you like to think, dolls like barbie do impact on children, it shows that this is whats acceptable and the norm and that's not ok in this day and age. Check out this doll called 'Lammily' as a great substitute to barbie, she's got healthy proportions and has a much better lifestyle model
Actually, studies have shown that lammily has less realistic body proportions because the proportions aren't compatible with each other. The guy got averages from women for different things but averages in numbers doesn't mean the majority of people. If you got someone with a size 0 waist and a person with a size 26 the average between them would be 13 but neither of them had that size.
Also, pretty much ALL of Lammilys advertisement is just missing Barbie and how Lammily is so much better for being realistic. It's hopping on the bandwagon, not actually wanting to change anyone's views on body images.
He got the averages from a large database of measurements form 19 year old american girls, he also used a healthy hight/weight/shape ration to measure out proportions. The fact is Lammily could be the shape of many girls who actually exits, no where could someone with Barbies proportions exist...thats the point her measurements are distorted and unrealistic...it was about creating a average realistic doll, add the factors that she isn't in a high heel pose, has less makeup and a body made to be active and you have a far superior role model than barbie. Is she the perfect doll to convey this message, probably not, but she's a step in the right direction. In regards to the whole "bandwagon" thing, why do you think people start businesses? how do new brands make money? They find a nice that isn't being fulfilled in the market and try to fill it, thats what business is, and in this case it just so happens that they can make a positive contribution whilst making dollars.
As I said in an above comment, Barbie wasn't made that small to push those body images onto people. It made it easier to dress. Lammily may look like a " normal girl " but she's probably A LOT more difficult to dress. And it doesn't help that the doll is so expensive. As well as the fact that A LOT of people didn't even receive their pre ordered dolls or even the tracking codes.
And all the dolls having different skin is diversity ? It's a lot cheaper to make similar dolls with different skin and hair colors rather than completely similar to the race itself. That would make for a very expensive doll.
And there shouldn't be a problem with Barbie being feminine. Her slogan is LITERALLY " Be who you wanna be " and she's had SO MANY careers in male dominated fields. She has been a President, an astronaut, doctors, and more. Lammily only has " realistic proportions " going for her.
yes because it's Mattel's fault that you feed your kid donuts and McDonald's and sit them in front of a TV, not the parents! it's NEVER the freaking parents' fault (psst, I'm being sarcastic)
Desperate dumb boys are biting the carpet because people want to get rid of fat shaming, and come up with shit like that. Thats pretty sad.
