That's not entirely true, Eric the Red was exiled from Iceland after he killed some of his family according to some books while most state not the victims; oh his sailing trips during the exile was when he discovered Greenland and named it so he could lure the people in Iceland to move to a land with 'beautiful landscape and fertile green valleys.'
