I read an article on how the majority of Canadians shoot left because it's determined by how you first learn with a stick; and we usually get a stick at a really young age and for most of us the right hand is dominant so it makes sense to have it up top controlling the stick. Meanwhile Americans learn hockey a little later in life so the majority of them are right handed shots because it makes sense to struggle a little controlling with non-dominant hand but having more accuracy aiming/passing with your dominant hand (right) halfway down the shaft. Hence why right handed defencemen are so coveted 1) it takes a long time to become a good defencemen, and the only people putting in 20plus years skating backwards taking pucks off their feet and shins are 'nucks. 2) most young Canadians learn at a young age of you play forward you score more which gives you more opportunities for cellys.
