Damn I hate when people do this. You were a kid too at one point and probably just as annoying.
Besides, being a dick to someone who doesn't know they're being annoying/ isn't able to pick up on emotions is kind of pointless when you think about it.
I was a camp counselor for two weeks, minus weekends. I had a three and a half year old and he was so cute, but the horror when a group of like 10 three to five year olds won't listen to you is terrifying. Their games were pretty cute though - clumps of dirt were dinosaur bones and they'd run up to me and give me their dirt clumps to put in the makeshift "museum" I made on a whim. They might not listen sometimes but they sure are cute. And a lot nicer than older kids.
I don't want any kids of my own but I'll be damned if people tell me I'm an idiot for listening to my nephews story of a lizard biting him then having it's parent make it apologize and kiss the boo boo

I ignore them. I don't have whatever brain function is necessary to deal with them, I have trouble understanding them and my completely unconscious default is to stare at them uncomfortably. I had trouble dealing with other kids as a child, too. So no, I don't smile at them or help them with anything, I look around for an adult who will do it for them in a way thay won't scar them like I likely would. This goes for kids as old as 11 or 12.
Damn, I'm doing pretty well for myself as a retard *pats myself on the back* :D

Yeah, given that I encounter children approximately .01% of the time, if ever, learning how to deal with them isn't high on my list. I think I'm doing fine, what with not having to be responsible for anyone else's children ever and having this disposable income to myself.
