The dark parts are very dark at the beginning because the intensity values are still linear, not in the srgb color space that screens expect. So it's just a matter of applying some 'gama correction'. What's very nice about raw is that there are more than 8 bits per channel. What is not nice about raw is that the number of software that does the mathematically correct thing with them is zero.
