Some schools give on campus suspension. Which is basically they have to do schoolwork while supervised, not allowed to sleep, have to eat lunch there, etc.

my school did this, ISS in-school-suspension. giving kids time off is basically a reward, sure their parents are mad but they'd be mad at them no matter how they got punished for trouble.

Yeah, forcing the kid to stay home a few days was supposed to punish the parents, which would theoretically lead to them coming down on the kid so s/he'd get their shit together. Sadly, most parents don't seem to give a shit about their kids in the first place, so having having their time away from the kids interrupted by a suspension doesn't really have the intended effect, anymore.

My school does in school suspensions, you sit in an office and do nothing but work and eat lunch later.
