Although called a "FRENCH BRAID", this hairstyle did not originate in France. In French, the hairstyle is natively called tresse africaine (litterally: african braid).

So because it originated somewhere in Africa does that mean white people can't use it ? The English invented the modern Toilet Paper we use so does that mean only English Descendants can wipe their ass with Charmin ? Muslims invented coffee and a bunch of technology so do they only get to use it ?
I can educate myself but you can't get rid of a shitty personality.
Culture is invented by people. And culture is shared and changed over time.
And by your below comment I would say you're the racist one. Cultural appropriation is HIGHLY misused to mean just doing something from another culture, when it isn't. Cultural appropriation is when you APPROPRIATE something, meaning you steal it and claim it as your own. I'm pretty sure none of the coachella hippie people are claiming to have invented dreadlocks or Mehndi or Buddhism.
That is not the point Black women do braids because our hair tangles badly and its the easiest way to wear it. Hence braids (mode of dressing ,including hair) is our culture, black culture. However we were judged for this hairstyle. Research shows that black women with weaves are more likely to get jobs than those with braids. Something being part of your culture (and a form of discrimination), copied by someone else of another culture (culture appropriation) is disrespectful to the "struggle", the black people struggle.
Dude, chill. Becky from Michigan doing a side braid isn't discriminating anyone by doing her hair like that. And don't act like that's what makes them not be hired. Everyone does braids, every culture bad their variation for it.
And you CANNOT say that it's racist to say that rapping and break dancing isn't part of black culture because there " isn't a black culture " two years ago, only now to say anything black people do is part of their culture and anyone except white people can do it because they were all obviously racist until going to cochella one year and all of a sudden took a bunch of things and claimed they were white and all their great grandparent owned hundred of slaves.
Like, that's not what happened at all and people like you blow shit way out of proportion and you know it.
all culture is appropriated. all trends start with one person who was originally being unique. telling people they cannot do a fashion or tradition because it belonged to someone else is like telling another person they cannot stop being a certain way because that's how their ancestors were, actually its the exact same thing its just the flip side of that coin.
Firstly I'm black so don't tell me I'm racist when I say I don't like weaves. I personally wouldn't ever get one, just because I dont like the process but I can still appreciate a good weave, I don't think my hair choices have affected peoples view of me (at least not where I stay). Also if my other-race friends ask me about my hair (or any other part of my culture) or to braid their hair it makes me happy to think they are taking an interest in me and my culture.
