respect is one of those things that is earned, but should be given to anyone until they prove themselves unworthy, but love is a bit more unconditional... i think you can love and hate someone, although i belong to the mindset that everyone should love oneanother... like, you can despise someone and not want to talk or be around them, but should still feel bad for them if terrible things befall them, and care. so you know, love your family, respect the ones who deserve it.
I'd go a step further: I think the whole concept of "deserving" is weird and unnatural - it's something we impose on reality, and doesn't actually have any meaning except in the context of our own inconsistent moralities

If your parents treat you like shit you shouldn't have to love them
Look, it's all in your beliefs; if you are a christian/jew then yeah, you should treat all people as if you love them because they're all children of god. If you are an atheist then there is nothing stopping you from not loving your family member or whoever. Personally, though, I prefer to see the good side in people rather than the bad.
wtf... loving your family has nothing to do with religion. if you need a commandment to be a good loving person you are not a good loving person.

it should be an automatic thing to be nice. Before I knew what a commandment was, I was nice.
no one said you need to be a Christian to love people a specific way.
