Actually, when the Spanish arrived, they tried to make friends with the Aztecs, but the Spanish saw them sacrificing humans from other tribes and taking out their hearts with an obsidian knife. While the victim was still alive. Since the Spanish were Christian, they kinda freaked out and tried to stop it, and it kinda worked for a while, but then both sides had misunderstandings and some Aztecs wanted to keep sacrificing, then finally, the Spanish attacked, while under strict orders not to, mind you, because they thought the Aztecs were going to kill them. The Aztecs retaliated and chased the Spanish out of their city, and a lot of Spanish men died during this, also known as la noche triste, or the night of sorrow. The Aztecs even killed their leader during this night, who was trying to make peace between both sides. then the Spanish had to fight the Aztecs, because they kept trying to kill the Spanish after that. the more you know.
The Spanish didn't come to be friends with the Aztecs, they came for resources they could provide. Things like slaves and food and riches. The Spanish came in the year that the Aztecs calendar said it was a year of peace so they didn't have the trained strength to fight against the Spanish. And the killed their Aztec leader because they thought he had become weak in this time of crisis.
The Spanish won because they had advanced technologies that the Aztecs had no knowledge of
i.e guns, gunpowder, horses (they had none), dogs (they also had none), armoured soilders and so on.
That is the more you now know if anyone cares
