I think one of the only reasons is for codes. For instance.. A=1, B=2, C=3...
4, 9, 3, 11, 2, 21, 20, 20

Well, in ASCII, those are A=065, a=097, B=066, b=098, etc. If we changed the order, we would mussy up things for computers.
