I've heard that the folds trap in the moisture

Whatever leaves the maximum surface area directly exposed is best. More surface area that has your sweat (and dead skin aka. mite food) on it is exposed to be dried out if it is left messy. Although ideally speaking, you should flip the comforter and sheets over ie. make the bed "upside down".

I never make my bed right away. Living in a dorm room, usually get up and go to first class, then I clean up a little when I get back

Or we could shower and then go to bed. Do you think that would make a difference?

I would think that, overall, the less dirt you leave in the bed, the better.
