When I visited Japan I recognised the courtyard outside of the hotel I stayed at from Durarara!! The animators really do make their real-world settings as they should be.

So, they used a photo for their background. I'm not too impressed.

No, they didn't. They took the time to actually draw all of that in. Even if they TRACED the photo, they still had to be careful about it, and color it in just right, and everything.
