Is that cat dead or is he just carrying it around.

He's carrying it around. Its the scruff that's making the cat look kind of limp. Plus you can see how the cat's front legs are tense. If it was dead it would be limp. Nor would it's eyes be closed. It it was dead it would be floppy.
