I recently watching the movie Frequency (it has Dennis Quaid, it's really good) and from that film I learned that to talk on the ham radio you have to have a license

Yes you do, not hard to get and good to have. If all hell breaks loose ham radios will still work as will cb radios I belive

We used to use CB radios when we drove with two cars to keep in touch with the other car. It was a lot of fun talking to the truckers too.

I use it when driving from florida to texas to talk to truckers to find out where speed traps are or bad traffic when visiting family

I haven't used one in years but we always made code names for ourselves. We were probably pretty annoying to listen to, now that I think about it.
