Guess what? Christmas began as a pagan festivity, meant to celebrate the return of the sun after three days of it being at the lowest orbit of the year. It was then "recycled" by the Christians.
Also, guess what? Valentine's Day is actually a Pagan celebration, and then, the Christian Church miraculously decided that Saint Valentine was the saint patron of love. Funny.
what? Christmas (as we know it here in Sweden) Began with midvinterblotet (Middle-of-winter-sacrifice) to the gods. Then there was christians, and they told people that the day of midvinterblotet was the day of Jesus birthday. Many old religions already had some kind of celebration in the middle of the winter.

Valentines day IS a celebration for Sankt Valentine. He married couples that were not allowed to, wanted to show that love is a beautiful thing that should not go to waste. People did not know there were already another "Day of love", and decided that the 14th of February should be the day of Valentine. However, some rituals and such may have been from other religions, or just straight from the heart.
