I tell jokes to make people laugh even at the expense of my dignity. In the long run it makes people like me more. So I guess one leads to the other for me..

It's not asking about the effect, it's asking about the reasoning behind it. You joke to make people laugh.

I just think of something funny, and then I make a joke. I don't consider my image at all. Why would I?
