Patents only protect a product for 20 years. A trade secret, if kept secret, can protect indefinitely. The practice is not uncommon.
Oh, and WD-40 is popular because of name recognition, not the quality of the product. Any number of companies produce far better products than WD-40.

I don't know the validity of this but I do know wd-40 stands for water displacement and 40 what how many different formulas they tried before settling with the 40th
