Cats will be cats

You can train them not to. We trained our cats by spraying water whenever they did and it seemed to have worked. They don't tear up furniture or bother the Christmas tree. We also have scratching posts for them to scratch on and they use them pretty often.

It works best when they're a kitten rather than an adult cat
