I hate to ruin everyones theroy but it dates back to the ancient roman times and was used as a symbol of virility because it symbolized the scrotum. Aka the ball sack. From there it eventually evolved into a symbol of love.

Also it was the shape of the seed that served as birth control. they used it so often that it was even imprinted on their coins!
