I think the original story was that the dad died. Woody was andy's dad's toy. idk though

Woody was a childhood gift from andy's mom who had Jessie as a kid herself. Note in the 3rd movie the girl, Emily, looks like andy's mom and is around the same age growing up as Andy is when they first got the dolls.

Only reason Andy didn't have a dad was because human characters were really expensive to animate.
